What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

What is CBT?

CBT stands for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and has become a very popular and well-respected approach in treatment, largely due to extensive evidenced-based research which has shown it’s efficacy in treating many different types of issues including depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol and drug use problems, marital problems, eating disorders, and severe mental illness. Trauma-Focused CBT, or TF-CBT was later developed to specifically address the unique symptoms and challenges arising when healing from the impact of trauma.

“CBT is based on the theory that the way individuals perceive a situation is more closely connected to their reaction than the situation itself. Individuals’ perceptions are often distorted and unhelpful, particularly when they are distressed. Cognitive Behavior Therapy helps people identify their distressing thoughts and evaluate how realistic the thoughts are. Then they learn to change their distorted thinking. When they think more realistically, they feel better. The emphasis is also consistently on solving problems and initiating behavioral changes.” - Beck Institute

CBT has a very structured approach with the primary objective being the reduction of symptoms. As such, homework is a very important part of the CBT process as it ensures accountability and clear markers for achieving therapeutic goals. You will often hear therapists talk about “CBT worksheets”. These are forms of homework which can be done both in session and at home to support client’s understanding of distorted thinking, how to challenge negative thoughts, and other evidence-based skills.

Many therapists use aspects of CBT to support their clients, though may modify the approach to fit the specific needs of their client. CBT was first developed with adults in mind, though over the time has been adapted to help children and teens.
